has anybody read stuff by wendell berry, a kentucky poet and farmer. he has written mannnny books, but prolly my favorite is the gift of good land. realy nifty. most of his stuff can prolly be found used on amazon or such.
i put this under homesteading as this book is really about the whole lifestyle of farming. he has a good section on how small meat processors, the type who just butchered for farm families and then returend the same meat back were driven out of business by extremely expensive cleanliness standards imposed by the govenrment.
he has an interesting idea that obviously though they are necessary overall, that they were actually used by the bigger corporate farm types to help run family farms out of business since in general, no small farmers were complaining they'd become ill from their own small butcher. on a large scale, regulations are very important, but on a smaller scale, they can prevent familys from working to support themselves.
i just read that though he is in his eighties, it hink, that berry is very against nais and says he will go to jail protesting over it if it comes to it.
he is a very interesting thinker.
