My son has been taking care of two pigeons for the past month or so. One had been injured and it's doing well. The other one was kicked out of it's nest and Will has raised it since. They have come down with something and we are not familiar with pigeons and what to do. First off they are sneezing and coughing, making general weird noises that is not normal for them. Secondly, they have some sort of weird bugs on them now. At first I thought they were new feathers growing in as they look like new long thin ones poking out among the feathers. No, that's not it. They wiggle like worms and Will said they bite. What the heck are they and what do we do about them? Anyone that has experience with pigeons and can help us out would really make our day with solving these dilemas. Smiling & Waving, Sharon

Yeah, you and me both JJ! Although you weren't the one holding the little bugger looking at the wormie things when it was mentioned that the suckers bite. As cute as the dirty little birds are, I could have dropped it on the spot. Even so, I have an upset child because his misfit pigeons are not feeling well, so I'm trying to rectify the situation. Since I'm used to dealing with larger poultry and these two pigeons are young small birds I don't want to do something that can harm them more. JJ, hon, stop scratching! Didn't your mama ever tell you the more you scratch the more you're going to itch!! Smiling & Waving, Sharon

ok you have mites, it isnt a huge deal to get rid of, go to the pet store and get some caged bird mite spray and spray them down. they cant live on you so a hot soapy shower will do the trick. mites are easy to get rid of but you have to start everything fresh, clean cage, clean nest, clean bedding and birds. spray again in a week. mites will suck the life out of baby birds very quickly, once you get rid of the mitess the babies shoudl perk right up, in the mean time you can give them a little pedialite in their mash a little Vit B in their water will help perk them back up also. yep thats the way mites work, gross little buggers too, but they come and go like that, I would take out the babies, spray the cage down good with an insecticide, leave set for an hour, hose it down let dry. toss out any old bedding and spray the next box very thouroughly. especially cracks and corners. be careful with poultry dust on young birds, its a bit stronger than it needs to be for young birds and be toxic to pigeon poults. I recomend the OTC bird mite spray for caged birds. its more gentle on the birds and effective on killing mites. It can be used on birds from a Macaw right down to a finch, safe and gentle.
