Here's a picture of the coop for the girls.  My son built it and painted the Texas flag on it.  He did a great job.  You can't see it from this angle, but there are big doors on either side covered with cattle wire and metal mesh for ventillation, because it does get really scorching hot here deep in the heart of Texas in the summer.  Now I just need the girls to get big enough to live in it.

Yes, there are huge (40 feet tall) pecan trees that are east of the coop and hen house and they shade the area until about noon.  The hen house provides really good shade for the afternoon hours.  North and south of the coop area are sheds and another big hackberry tree.   Our next thing is to figure out what will be best to cover the coop area with to keep birds of prey from eating our chickies.  We have owls and hawks in the area and they are a big concern for the chickens' safety.  What has everyone else used for such a large area to cover their coops with?  I'm open to all suggestions and they will be greatly appreciated.
