I  am curious what other chickenchatter members are paying for grain. I think that the prices are EXTREMELY out of whack for this economy. I was looking through my receipts from last year and the highest price I paid for a 50 lbs bag of layer pellet was $10.50 and this year I have paid on average $13.85 and the highest I have paid was $17.35 for the  same size bag.

The first year I had chickens, a bag of grain was about $6.75.

Now a bag of 'store brand' is about $10.50-$11.00.  It's down from last spring though (or was it the spring before?) when it was running $13.something a bag.

Blue seal is about $3 a bag more, and was up as high as $18.

It is even more expensive at TSC.

Funny thing is that my goat grain, with the same percent of protein, is about the same price as a bag of layer.  I really need to compare tags and see what the true differences are.

Now hay... omg.. that runs at $5.75-ish a bale.  Straw costs the same amount (the manager says it's shipped in from Canada and put through a 'process' lol). That's MUCH cheaper if you buy it from local farmers... and much better quality as well.

Yes, I do actually consider it cheap compare to how hay is running in other places!!  But it's still too much, especially when it's usually brown and yellow ohno:)

I am thinking the higher prices were reflecting the gas prices for trucking the grain around.. not so much for the grain itself.

I am paying Poulin.. 10.90 for egg layer plus, 9.60 for grower crumbles, and 4.50 per bale of shavings delivered and stacked in my shed.  He comes every 2 wks.

I can understand the reasoning behind gas prices but over the last 18 months gas was up to almost $5.00 a gallon and grain was $10 an 50lbs bag and currently gas is $2.69- $2.89 a gallon  and grain is $13.85. One of the owners of a grain store I was talking to said grain prices are a perfect example of supply and demand. as everyone is getting into having chickens. and we all  have even seen the price of anything associated with chickens go up.

Hmm... maybe we should get out of the chicken business and start growing hay...  scrhed:)

In my opinion, it isn't so much supply and demand, but what will the market bear?  If the feed stores are actually selling feed at $13.00 per bag (meaning it is flying off their shelves) than why sell it for $10.00?  With alot of people getting into the whole "chicken thing" and now articles in Time magazine, WSJ, and on Martha Stewart it will only get bigger.  The sad thing is that those who were raising chickens for sustanance will take a "pay cut", as the cost of rasing chickens will go up.

I was trying to see if a "chicken group" could get better pricing through any of the grain stores so far I haven't had good luck. But are group is not small and if there was some way to get better pricing would be great.

I just picked up 300 bales of first cut off the field for $3 a bale. good size 50 to 60 pound bales and it's real nice hay better then what TS is selling for $9.50 a bale. Average price for hay around her is 5 to 6 dollars a bale but if you look hard enough you can buy it cheaper.
