Heading out in a few minutes to process the very first roo completely solo (killing to cleaning).  Normally I clean, but dh wields the axe.

I'm using the broom method, I think.  Seems quick... omg I hope so.  *gulp*

Here's a nice blog on exactly how to do it.  http://widersky.wordpress.com/2010/04/07/how-to-kill-a-chicken/

I will say this boy is from a batch that we took back from someone else.  I hatched him but didn't raise him, so don't have the emotional attachment I have to my own boys.  Thank goodness.

It's done, cleaned, and in the fridge.  The actual carcass is boiling on the stove for broth and to get the last bits of meat off.  He was a far meatier bird than anything I've seen here.  Still no huge white breasts LOL, but even after I took off the usual there is still a ton to pick off.

Have a few questions about the process... not really as smooth or as.. obvious as I would have liked.  I'll ask those later though.. enough dealing with that for a little while.

:hugs:  Thank you!

I wish it had been a choice.  But it's necessity.  I bought groceries and purposely didn't buy meat... knowing I had birds to get in the freezer anyway.  Money is much too tight to spend on something I have access to on my own. :(

Well.. I did it recently.... JW (young buff orp roo) got too big for his britches.  He had been doing the one legged fan dance to me... pecked me on the leg a few times... was very aggressive to my young buff hens.... attacked his father..... the straw that broke the camel's back was when he pecked a bloody hole in my 8 yr old sons hand.... NOW that did it..

I had no plans to butcher a chicken that late in the afternoon.. had nothing ready.. but it sure didn't take me long.   I had Brad shoot him one time in the head with is pellet gun while I held JW by his feet.... Let him hang for a while ... Isaac let the truck tailgait down, laid fresh clean newspapers,  a butcher knife, and a garbage bag.  He and I plucked him... I was amazed how easy the feathers came out without intervention.  I guess cuz he was a young bird.  Rolled the newspaper up with all the feathers and such .. right into the garbage bag it went.  I kept the gizzard but none of the other organs.   I fried him up... and it was very good.:)  Not strong... or tough.    He had HUGE drumsticks.

Thank you. :)  I use to help process the (quail and dove) that my father and brothers brought back.. I just applied that knowledge... but plucked instead of skinned.

Brad was kinda shocked that I could do it.. lol  That bird was mean... I had given him alot of changes... but boy.. you just don't mess with my 2 legged kids.

I really need to learn how to do it. I have a bunch of roos that need to be done, and this time I'm "chickening out" and will let a mobile processor handle the job. I'm afraid I'll botch thoroughly cleaning the birds out.

Though if one of the boys goes after one of my kids I'll learn sooner rather than later! I won't tolerate aggressiveness.

Kudos to both of you for doing the job yourselves!
