My wife and I tried for the first time to make a batch of goats milk soap.  We went to a soap forum to get advise and directions when we were ready and had all that we needed for the trial run.

We chose a basic lard recipe, but went a little overboard on the grapeseed oil, only to learn you run the risk of a shrt shelf life for your soap.

Here's the recipe we figured out to use.

For lye I'm using Roebic lye from tractor supply store. It's 100% sodium hydroxide.

Figures base on the formula of oz, times saponification value.

LARD 64 OZ. - .141 - 9.024
GRAPESEED OIL ORGANIC 24 OZ. - .134 - 3.216
COCONUT OIL 14 OZ. - .178 - 2.492

TOTAL = 14.732 OZ. LYE

The same ingredients did calculate at 13.48 oz. of lye per a soap/lye calculation tool (sage.com).

We used the 13.49 oz of lye as recommended.

**********************************

We got 16 large bars of soap from that batch.

This was our first attempt and we learned a lot.  Making the soap answered some questions for me and what to do for the next time.

We are planning to let it sit for 4 to 6 weeks, end of March, and then give it a good try.

Stano, that is cooly impressive! Good job. Now, does the grapeseed oil have some sort of softening properties for the skin, or is it just for scent or color?

I'd also like to try my hand at soap sometime. I don't have any goats, but I guess you can make it with other stuff. Since I like to make molds, that would make it even more fun.

Hey, I could make a mold for Chicken Chatter soap! Mix up some soap and put a chicken feather in the center as a prize. Sort of like a tootsie pop! "How many washes does it take till you get to the feather?" Could put on the label, "When you get to the feather, you'll be tickled!"

Sorry, I got brain damage and it flies off the deep end sometimes. :haha:

I like it.

The grape seed oil does soften the bar, but as I found out I used way too much which shortens the shelf life and could cause (DOS)  Dreaded Orange Spots.

I think we're going to try our hand at making some oatmeal & olive oil soap next.

If we really get to know what we're doing we can get more creative.  I've seen some two tone soaps out there on the soap forum which were awesome.

This being our first batch we'll probably give a lot of it away as a trial to the family, so I'm not worried about the shelf life. The orange spots that could develop means that the oil went rancid and it's time to throw that soap out.

I guess time will tell how successful that batch is. The next batch I won't be using any grapeseed oil. Along with the olive oil I'll be adding coconut oil.

I think we were just lucky on our first batch.  A few things didn't seem to go right but the batch still came out.

Looking like great results there!

I often buy some at the local poultry swaps - makes a fragrant, easy way to "lather up" for the Saturday bath - whether you need it or not by then.  LOL

Whew, I thought the orange spots came out on who ever was using the soap.

Well, you will have the technique down in a batch or two and be making soap like old pros. Stano's Bed Bath and Breath. "If it stinks we can clean it up!"

Man, you are going to be so rich.
